Dehradun
Dehradun is a one of the seven districts of Garhwal region of Uttarakhand situated at an altitude of 640mts. The district headquarters is Dehradun and it also serves as the provisional capital of Uttarakhand since its foundation in 2000. Dehradun District is surrounded on the north by the district of Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal and Pauri-Garhwal in the east, Haridwar in the south, its western boundary adjoins the Sirmur(Nahan) district of Himachal Pradesh with the rivers Tons and Yamuna separating the two states. Dehradun is located in the Doon valley, 230 kilometers from the capital city of India, New Delhi.
Dehradun District also includes famous tourist destinations like Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Landour and Chakrata. The district stretches from the Ganga River in the east to the Yamuna River in the west, from the Terai and Shivaliks in the south and southeast to the Great Himalaya in the northwest.
Dehradun is nestled in the foothills of the gigantic mountain ranges of the Himalayas. Dehradun is frequently visited by lakhs of tourists every month throughout the year because of its popular excursions. The name Dehradun is a collection of two words where “dera” means camp and “dun” means valley.
Under the British command, Dehradun became an elite town with some of the best institutions. Today Dehradun is known for its unmatched quality of education with some of the best training, educational institutes, hostels and schools of India like Forest Research Institute, Indian Military Academy (IMA), Doon School, Welham Schools for girls and boys and many more. Dehradun is also well known within India because of its “Dehradooni basmati rice” and Lychee.
Dehradun is said to be one of the oldest cities in India, it is believed that Lord Rama and his brother did penance here for killing Ravana, the king of evil who kidnapped Sita.
The religious town of Rishikesh famous for numerous temples and rafting, the Queen of the hills – Mussoorie where millions of tourists visit every year, the quiet Chakarata Hills offering invigorating views of the spectacular Himalayas and a part of Rajaji National Park where you can encounter wildlife, all these places lies in Dehradun district. Dehradun delivers adventure, luxury, nature and everything that a tourist wants.
Places of great religious importance for hindus in the Garhwal Hills are easily accessible from Dehradun – Kedarnath, Badrinath Gangotri, Yamunotri, Hemkund Sahib etc.
